Koalas are a tree dwelling marsupial native to eastern Australia. Adults reach about 70cm and weigh around 14kg and have a lifespan of approx. 15 years. They feed on selective gumtrees, consuming around 1.3kg of leaves per day. This diet is relatively poor in nutrients and provides the koala little spare energy, so the animal spends long hours simply sitting or sleeping in tree forks, exposed to the elements but insulated by thick fur.They are solitary animals who are mostly nocturnal. They give birth to one live young. The “joey” appears from the pouch at about 5 months, after weaning it will then cling to the mothers back until they are 12 months old.
